We all love free stuff but the link between price and value is hard to shake off. Here at Production Expert we have been featuring weekly free plugin articles for years so we seen them all.

Here is a pick of ten you really should try. Click on the images to learn more. With EQ covered, the next just has to be compression. We were torn between this and the equally great TDR Kotelnikov. Their plugins are so good that they really redefine just what you can expect to get for free. Molotok and Kotelnikov would both have been very worthy entrants in this list in the compression category and SlickEQ would have been a great choice as an EQ.

In fact we could have done a whole list of TDR plugins. Nova is a little different and possibly the best of the bunch. It makes a great EQ without going near the dynamic element but it is the dynamic features that really set this apart. Get this plugin right now…. It can do the positively deranged swirling, pitch modulated stuff if you like but however impressive that is, in truth we never use those sounds. Of course, you can do synced or free-running delays, with no zipper noise if you want to automate the delay time but what this does really brilliantly is reverby-delays.

Everybody should have at least one decent convolution reverb and if you want one for free then this is a great place to find it. We all love the flexibility of algorithmic reverbs but if you want a fundamentally different sound hen you change settings there is no better way to get it than to call up a different IR.

Get a selection of 70 impulses from their vintage library for free – sounds good. The monitoring section features a mono button still missing from the Pro Tools mixer and channel solos for left right, middle and sides. Really handy! Add to that a calibratable VU meter with excellent ballistics and you have a great tool which also has nice sounding saturation!

Kelvgrand make some really smart plugins and this one gets modulation right. Klevgrand have always done great UIs and this is no exception, with a radar style layout which gives great feedback on what does what making using this plugin a really intuitive experience. There are an awful lot of free guitar plugins out there. Most of them are pretty good but of course, guitar tone choice is even more subjective than… well pretty much anything judging by the guitarists we know!

Our favourite free guitar plugin is the Minotaur from Nembrini. It makes a change from all the Tube Screamers out there and this plugin version of the mythically rare and unbelievably expensive Klon Centaur overdrive pedal sounds amazing. Compressor audio logic pro x free –

 

This means you might encounter new controls or discover something new about controls you are already familiar with. Threshold is simply the level at which the compressor will start to react to your audio track. The compressor will be triggered to reduce the audio signal any time the input goes over the threshold. Turn the threshold up, and the compressor will do less work, only reacting and reducing the level of your track when the signal gets loud.

If you want some gentle automated reduction on the peaks of your audio track, a high threshold is advisable. If you want a more affected and thick sound, you might want to set it low so that the compressor works much harder. Tip: A lot of producers will recommend using two compressors in a chain, one with a high threshold to capture the peaks, then another with a lower threshold to add overall level consistency, sustain, or body to the audio layer.

The ratio is the amount by which the level will be reduced when your input signal exceeds the threshold. A high ratio understandably means more compression. The ratio is expressed as a proportion of the input level to the output level. So a setting of means that a signal that is two decibels over the threshold will be reduced by one decibel, and a signal that is eight decibels over will be reduced by four. Makeup is a handy gain control that lets you bring up the overall level of the compressed signal.

Ideally, the makeup gain should match the gain reduction so that when the effect is bypassed the maximum signal level stays the same. The compressed signal will sound louder but should be using the same amount of headroom.

Next, Knee is how harsh or gentle the compressor acts on the input signal. In a broad sense, it changes how the compressor reacts as the signal approaches the threshold. The Focusrite Red 3 Dual Compressor hardware is known to be very clean and punchy. Its output transformer is also supposed to add some non-linear enhancement to the audio source. The Studio FET compressor is based on the classic Blackface , which you have might come across, since there are so many plugin emulations of it.

FET stands for Field Effect Transistor —another completely useless fact you can use to impress people. The Classic VCA compressor is based on the dbx a. A lot of people love it on the drum bus or the master bus. This is a VCA compressor, so it gives you quite a bit of control. Optical compressors are known to be some of the slowest kind of compressors , but the nonlinear behaviors of the attack and release make people love optical compressors for their musical and smooth compression.

Because optical compressors are tube compressors, they also add some nice tube warmth and saturation to the audio. What matters is knowing how these compressors sound and behave, so you can choose the right one for the right audio source. Some compressors have a knee control, and I have set them all to 0. All the compressors are doing the same amount of gain reduction as well. Lastly, I made sure they are all volume-matched , so we are not fooled by loudness. I liked the Studio VCA the most because it was able to drastically reduce the dynamic range of the vocals and really flatten them in a pleasant way. Even with 20 dB of gain reduction, the vocals sounded really smooth, which is exactly what you want for great vocal compression.

The Studio VCA also adds some really nice harmonic saturation to the vocals, making them a bit warmer and thicker. I thought the Platinum Digital and the Classic VCA sounded the worst because I could hear very noticeable volume drop whenever there is a loud part, and I could hear the vocal levels fluctuate quite a lot, which is really not ideal for vocal compression.

Aside from the best and the worst, the rest of the compressors all sounded pretty similar to one another, and they sounded okay. Now of course I know with different settings you might get better results, because if these plugin emulations are anywhere like the hardware counterparts, their attack and release should be all different from one compressor to another, even at the same values.

While that means you cannot install the app directly on any Windows PC, there is another way round. As we have mentioned, you cannot install the app directly on your PC. The Attack and Release parameters shape the dynamic response of Compressor. The Attack parameter determines the time it takes after the signal exceeds the threshold level before Compressor starts reducing the signal.
